Strawberry Days Royalty

Laura Giles - Daily Herald

Strawberry Days kicked off Saturday in Pleasant Grove as nine young women competed for the title of Strawberry Days Rodeo Queen. Ashlee Stewart, 21, of Fairview, was awarded the honor after a day full of competition.

"They're judged on modeling and appearance, public speech, impromptu questions, interview and horsemanship," said Jolynne Goodman, Rodeo Women's president. The questions pertain to aspects of a rodeo, horsemanship and history of Pleasant Grove, according to Goodman.

The horsemanship part of the competition, usually held at the rodeo grounds, is a big part of the competition, she said. This year, the horsemanship portion had to be moved to a private indoor arena because of the rainy weather.

"They are judged on the way they handle their animal. It must always be under control," Goodman said.

The contestants are given a set pattern that includes a sliding stop, changing leads and spins back and forth.

The pattern is given to the riders just before they do it and must be done correctly.

In addition to Stewart, Bailee Sizemore, 17, of Kamas, was chosen as first attendant. Chantell Pilcher, 18, of Morgan, was chosen as second attendant.

"They will represent us for Strawberry Days," said Goodman. "They will go to city councils and promote our celebration and take strawberry cheesecakes."

The royalty will also visit the LDS Church Office Building in Salt Lake City and appear on the television show "Good Things Utah."

Other duties include riding in many different parades throughout the summer. They will be heavily involved with all of the various Strawberry Days activities and the rodeo.

The queen will receive a saddle made especially for her. Each member of the royalty received tiaras, belt buckles and shopping sprees.

Saturday's competition was the Senior Rodeo Queen Contest, which is for young women, ages 16 to 25. The Junior Rodeo Queen Contest will be held today at 10 a.m. at the Pleasant Grove Rodeo Grounds.

This year's Strawberry Days theme is "A Bridge from the Past." The festivities will be June 14-20.
